Basilisk

Also known as Basiliscus

A legendary serpent whose venom, breath, or gaze can make merely approaching it fatal.

Reference note

At a glance

The basilisk is a creature of disproportionate danger. Some early descriptions make it a small serpent rather than an enormous beast, yet credit it with killing through its gaze or poisoning its surroundings. Its name is associated with the idea of a “little king.”

Reference note

Tradition & history

Pliny the Elder’s account describes a deadly serpent with a crownlike marking. Medieval portrayals develop additional characteristics, including features associated with a rooster. Stories about the basilisk and cockatrice become entangled, so descriptions change across texts and illustrations.
