Black Shuck

Also known as Old Shuck, Shuck

A spectral black dog said to haunt the roads, coast, and countryside of East Anglia.

Reference note

At a glance

Black Shuck belongs to the British tradition of uncanny black dogs. Accounts describe a frightening animal encountered in lonely places, often with striking or luminous eyes. Its meaning varies: some encounters foretell death, while others describe a less hostile presence.

Tradition & history

The legend is strongly associated with Norfolk and Suffolk. A famous strand concerns events at Bungay and Blythburgh during a storm in 1577. Later storytelling connects these church encounters with Black Shuck, but the wider tradition contains differing descriptions and local accounts.
