Brownie

Also known as Broonie, Brounie

A household spirit that performs chores at night but can abandon a home when offended.

Reference note

At a glance

A brownie quietly helps with domestic or agricultural work while the household sleeps. Food offerings often acknowledge its assistance. The arrangement is delicate: disrespect, criticism, or an unsuitable gift can bring the help to an abrupt end.

Reference note

Tradition & history

Brownie stories connect supernatural assistance with the everyday demands of maintaining a household or farm. Accounts differ over what the spirit accepts. Clothing is a departure-trigger in many tales, while some stories distinguish an acceptable offering from an insulting payment. There is no dependable employment contract with a brownie.
