A ghost is generally understood as a dead person’s presence or apparition; a poltergeist is defined by disruptive activity such as knocks and moving objects. Stories may overlap, but the terms do not name the same thing.

Ghost
Ghost is a broad English-language category for an apparition, voice, presence, or disturbance interpreted as the surviving spirit of a dead person. Beliefs about the dead differ profoundly across cultures, religions, and periods; “ghost” is therefore a useful index term, not a universal explanation. Experiences may include sensed presence, dreams, sounds, visual figures, or place-based stories.
Poltergeist, from German words meaning “noisy spirit,” describes disturbances such as knocks, thrown objects, damaged household items, or unexplained movement. Unlike the conventional image of a visible dead person, a poltergeist is defined by disruptive activity. Investigations have variously considered haunting belief, deliberate trickery, errors of observation, building movement, and psychological or social stress.
