Cursed Object

Also known as accursed object, haunted object

An object believed to bring misfortune, danger, or supernatural influence.

Reference note

At a glance

A cursed object is an item believed to carry harmful supernatural power or to transmit misfortune to an owner, household, or anyone who handles it. Traditions vary widely: a curse may be intentionally placed, arise from a taboo violation, attach to a burial object, or develop through stories surrounding repeated accidents. The category is comparative and should not erase the specific religious or cultural meaning of any one object.

Reference note

Tradition & history

Stories about dangerous relics, stolen grave goods, and forbidden possessions appear in many periods. Modern museum and internet legends often grow through selective retelling: ordinary mishaps are gathered around an object while uneventful ownership is forgotten.

Reference note

In fiction

Horror fiction commonly gives an object a clear agency and escalating rules. Folklore may instead emphasize taboo, moral consequence, improper transfer, or the community’s interpretation of coincidence.
