Death Omen

An occurrence interpreted as a warning that someone will die.

Reference note

At a glance

A death omen is a sign believed to announce an approaching death. It may involve an animal’s behavior, a dream, or an ordinary event given ominous meaning. The sign need not be a supernatural creature itself.

Reference note

Tradition & history

The Texas State Historical Association records Texas beliefs involving midnight howling, certain bird calls, and dreams of losing teeth. These examples belong to traditions passed between people and generations; their meanings are not shared uniformly across the state.
