Storytelling

Unreliable Narrator

A narrator whose account gives readers reason to question its accuracy or judgment.

At a glance

An unreliable narrator presents a version of events the story invites readers to doubt. The unreliability may involve facts, interpretation, or moral judgment. Deliberate lying is one possibility; self-deception, misunderstanding, and limited awareness are others.

In reader conversations

“He insists he isn’t jealous. His account of the evening makes a different argument.”
