Redcap

Also known as Redcomb, Bloody Cap

A murderous goblin of border ruins, said to stain its cap with its victims’ blood.

Reference note

At a glance

The redcap inhabits ruined castles and towers, particularly places associated with violence. Travelers seeking shelter may find themselves entering its territory. Its distinctive red cap receives its color from blood rather than dye.

Reference note

Tradition & history

Border accounts describe a stocky, elderly-looking creature with formidable teeth, clawlike fingers, iron boots, and a staff. Some stories give Christian scripture or a crucifix the power to drive it away. The name also appears in other traditions with different characteristics, so the murderous border goblin is not the only figure called a redcap.
