Shadow Person

Also known as shadow figure, shadow people

A dark humanlike form reported at the edge of vision or during sleep disruption.

Reference note

At a glance

A shadow person is a dark, human-shaped figure reported in bedrooms, hallways, or peripheral vision, often without visible features. The label is recent and gathers experiences that may have different causes. Many reports occur during sleep paralysis, when wakeful awareness overlaps with dream imagery and a sensed presence. Others may involve low-light perception, expectation, migraine, medication, or ordinary shadows.

Reference note

Tradition & history

Internet forums and paranormal broadcasting helped standardize the phrase in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. One recurring “hat man” form is a contemporary narrative pattern, not evidence that all witnesses encountered one entity.

Reference note

In fiction

Online horror frequently turns shadow figures into a hierarchy of named beings. Clinical accounts instead focus on sleep state, fear, visual ambiguity, and the brain’s tendency to detect human forms.

Winn can feel everyone’s emotions. Lark gives her nothing. On a Texas ranch with monsters beneath the house, that silence might be the most dangerous thing she’s found.
